Sonny Rollins' Milestone period, which resulted in 20 separate recordings from 1972-96, has been much maligned by dissatisfied jazz critics who feel the great tenor's later output has not been on the same level as his earlier work. Although there have been a few inconsistent sets during the time, the best of Rollins' records from those years ranks with his finest of all time. This two-CD set has 19 selections taken from 13 of the albums, mixing together diverse originals with classic versions of "Autumn Nocturne," "Duke of Iron," "Cabin In the Sky," "Tennessee Waltz," and a rendition of "Skylark" that has a long melodic cadenza by Rollins. A fine sampler of Rollins' later years with superior liner notes by Chip Stern, although collectors will want to get many of these complete sets (virtually all of which are currently available on CD).

Unlike the recent release The Complete Eric Clapton, this compilation of another master guitarist has all the signs of having some thought and effort put into the track selection. The tracks have picked from McLaughlin's full career whilst being "borrowed" from a broad variety of recording labels. So the listener is exposed to McLaughlin from being part of Graham Bond's Organisation through Lifetime, Miles, Mahavishnu right on to McLaughlin's latest album, Industrial Zen. Therefore there are a very large number of musicians to be heard playing with McLaughlin here: indeed, a veritable who's who of the modern jazz scene. The liner notes are excellent by (the Jaco Pastorius biographer) Bill Milkowski, and there is also a pretty thorough set of details of the tracks used. And where necessary, apologies have been made either for the need for some track length editing of the original track (but still giving you approximately 88 minutes on each disc), or indicating where the compilers have not being able to access Arjen's Bag from the seminal album Extrapolation (because the record label didn't want to license - shame on them). But instead an alternative version has been found, to me an unknown version of the tune, known as Follow Your Heart, when McLaughlin was briefly part of a Joe Farrell group. You are moved from McLaughlin the bebop player of the early 60's, to the innovative jazz rock fusionist of the 70's, to his Indo-jazz rock and flamenco/Latin jazz fusion explorations and through to the modern day - and via the digression into modern serious music. One minor negative comment: perhaps more tracks representing his output from the 90's might have been provided? Nevertheless, as a starter for a music fan who comes to his music for the first time and wants to hear why John McLaughlin is seen and heard as one of the best guitarists in world, this double CD is an excellent place to start.

In his own time on Immediate Records, British soul shouter Chris Farlowe's output was sliced and diced and re-compiled so many times that no one even remembers the names of his original albums for the label (not that those were any better or more coherent -- Immediate founder Andrew Oldham was always so busy trying to exploit Farlowe any way he could, as one of the two or three best-selling talents on his label). Out of Time, subtitled "The Immediate Anthology," is the solution, its 49 songs drawn equally from Farlowe's singles, B-sides, EPs, and LP tracks, with the quality of the performances the only real deciding factor. The first half-dozen songs here could sell even the skeptics on Farlowe's talent, his renditions of "In the Midnight Hour," "Mr. Pitiful" and "Treat Her Right" are among the most convincing white soul you're ever likely to hear from either side of the Atlantic, and they also explain precisely how Farlowe was able to share a stage with Otis Redding (the equivalent of visiting royalty) on Ready, Steady Go (when Farlowe covered his first Stones' song, "Satisfaction," he used an arrangement that made it sound more like Otis than like the Stones). The only disadvantage is that the hits are, of necessity, spread out to two platters, but if it were solely the hits one were concerned with, then one would be getting one of those compilations, instead of this jewel, the next-best thing to a Chris Farlowe box set. The sound is never less than excellent -- and good and loud -- and the annotation is very thorough. This set makes the perfect companion to Rock 'n' Roll Soldier: Anthology 1970-2004.

Creative Slideshow for BUSY people
ClipShows are essentially templates for slideshows. They contain graphics, stock pictures, effects and even audio clips that are pre-arranged into interesting slideshow segments. You use them in your slideshow by replacing the stock photos with your own, add new clips, or by inserting the originals "straight up" into your slideshow without further customizations.

Using ClipShows, you can compose entire slideshows quickly and easily. Use them as starting points to jumpstart your slideshow creation process. Get new ideas on how to compose your photos and video clips in creative ways.

Using ClipShows
In MemoriesOnTV, you can load a ClipShow by clicking on the "Create Slides from ClipShow" button.

Locate the ClipShow file (the .ctv file), or click LIBRARY to access the files in the ClipShow packages that you may have installed. Select a ClipShow file to load it.

Once you have loaded a ClipShow, you will see the ClipShow editor window. Replace the default pictures with your own, click FINISH and MemoriesOnTV will generate all the necessary slides. That's it!
