When considering must-own holiday albums, Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Nat King Cole's "Christmas Album" are the obvious big-hitters. However, it would be foolish to overlook "A Christmas To Remember" - an album that never disappoints. A beautiful and ecclectic collection of holiday songs, A Christmas To Remember can satisfy, to steal a line from Nat King Cole, "Kids from one to ninety-two." From Pamela's magical renditions of "Up On The Housetop" and "Frosty The Snowman" to Max Kim's contributions on "Dancin' In A Winter Wonderland" and "Rock Around The Christmas Tree", these Christmas recordings truly warm the soul. The Swingin' Organs' whimsical "Christmas Polka" is an instant classic, and Atlanta Rhythm's "Jingle Bell Rock" is a delightful twist on the Bobby Helms classic. For a fitting ending, The Christmas Brass's take on "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" only leaves you wanting more.
This album is a must-own for anyone who appreciates good holiday music, and the bountiful 25-track songlist makes it a bargain. Our family has this album on constant rotation during the holidays, and I highly recommend that you do the same.

Lover of Life, Singer of Songs (with the subtitle The Very Best of Freddie Mercury Solo) is a compilation album of Freddie Mercury's solo songs. It was released (except in the U.S.) on September 4, 2006, the day before the 60th anniversary of Mercury's birth. It was released on November 21, 2006 in the U.S, three days before the 15th anniversary of Mercury's death. A 2-disc DVD was released to accompany the CD. The DVD contained "The Untold Story" documentary on Disc 1, and various music videos on Disc 2.

Rhino has a history of doing things up right, but this time it's outdone itself. More than five hours of prog, from The Nice to Golden Earring, presented thoroughly and largely chronologically. Depending on your outlook, it's either heaven or hell. There's plenty here to occupy the idle, drug-riddled mind; some well known (Focus's "Hocus Pocus," ELP's "Knife Edge," Genesis) and some wonderfully obscure (Wigwam in their pre-Virgin days, when they were an obscure, Finnish-Irish outfit, and Hatfield and the North's delicious first single, "Let's Eat Again [Real Soon]," which had nothing to do with food). Of course, it's mostly European, but that's where prog was, (as was punk, but that's another discussion altogether). You even get the Italians from outer space, PFM, and one of the few French bands to mean anything--Magma. Toss in some Roxy Music, a few Krauts, early ELO, and a whole host of others, and you have something close to paradise, or overkill. With cover art by--who else--Roger Dean, and a tab of windowpane (just kidding, really!), it's everything you could imagine a prog rock box being. Bloody glorious.

Strutting Texas blues. This compilation album at least features the man doing what he does best. Many collections concentrate on his dire seventies rock'n'roll glutfest and his even direr mid-sixties early embarrassments. It's the blues that defines him from 1969 onwards, and this CD thankfully concentrates on that definition of him as an artiste. Johnny Winter has many hardcore fans, myself obviously included. His fire, precision and inventiveness combine with his songwriting talents and his ability to quote stock phrases of the Blues Bible in a new and exciting way. This creates instant classics. I'm sometimes surprised to find I'm listening to a Winter original when I'd assumed it was something from the early rustic days of the blues. As for his guitar playing, well, combine the sting and attack of Albert "the Ice Man" Collins and the raw scrape of slide legend Elmore James and the development of musical sentences from Clapton's Cream days and you'll have a fair idea of Johnny's appeal. That voice too is pretty cool - it's like a coyote gargling with sandpaper. Diehard fans will have all these tracks anyway - they've appeared on his three Alligator Records releases from the early to mid eighties. And they're terrific. A healthy helping of Texan blues with extra chili - he yodels, growls, yelps and brags through these songs with an energy and relish that's kinda hard to resist. Each solo is a delight- the slower numbers feature exciting developments of licks and phrases - you can follow the ideas through each solo, and the faster songs combine Chuck Berry chops with sudden high register flurries. Guitar fans will argue until the end of time about the merits of their particular hero. My mind was made up in 1969 with one song from a CBS sampler. Yep, it was I Love Everybody by Johnny Winter from his third album, confusingly called Second Winter. I bought every album for the next 40 years and the tracks on this compilation represent a period I recall with great fondness. At the risk of sounding cliched - Go Johnny Go! (Amazon's Customer)

Chick Corea and John McLaughlin share one of the great pedigrees in the music of the 20th century: they were both key sidemen on Miles Davis' seminal albums In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. They have played together since those heady days, as a duo or as sit-in guests. Five Peace Band was Corea's idea of putting together a dream band to play all kinds of jazz, and he approached McLaughlin. Corea chose the other members in saxophonist Kenny Garrett, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, and bassist Christian McBride.

In the Land of Grey and Pink is considered by many to be a pinnacle release from Caravan. The album contains an undeniable and decidedly European sense of humor and charm. In addition, this would mark the end of the band's premiere lineup. Co-founder David Sinclair would leave Caravan to form Matching Mole with Soft Machine drummer and vocalist Robert Wyatt in August of 1971. As a group effort, In the Land of Grey and Pink displays all the ethereal brilliance Caravan created on their previous pair of 12" outings. Their blending of jazz and folk instrumentation and improvisational styles hints at Traffic and Family, as displayed on "Winter Wine," as well as the organ and sax driven instrumental introduction to "Nine Feet Underground." These contrast the decidedly aggressive sounds concurrent with albums from King Crimson or Soft Machine. In fact, beginning with the album's title, there seems to be pastoral qualities and motifs throughout. Another reason enthusiasts rank this album among their favorites is the group dynamic which has rarely sounded more singular or cohesive. David Sinclair's lyrics are of particular note, especially the middle-earth imagery used on "Winter Wine" or the enduring whimsy of "Golf Girl." The remastered version of this album includes previously unissued demos/alternate versions of both tracks under the titles: "It's Likely to Have a Name Next Week" and "Group Girl," respectively. The remastered disc also includes "I Don't Know Its Name (Alias the Word)" and "Aristocracy," two pieces that were completed, but shelved in deference to the time limitations imposed during the days of wine and vinyl. The latter composition would be reworked and released on Caravan's next album, Waterloo Lily. The 12-page liner notes booklet includes expanded graphics, memorabilia, and an essay penned specifically for the reissue.

Playlist: The Very Best of Quiet Riot features 15 tracks defined on the back jacket as "the life-changing songs, the out-of-print tracks, the hits, the fan favorites everyone loves, and the songs that make the artists who they are." While it may boast little in the way of rare, live, unreleased, or "out-of-print" material, it certainly eclipses 1996's Greatest Hits collection as the most listenable Quiet Riot overview on the market. All 14 tracks (15 is a CD-ROM cut) are culled from the group's three biggest albums -- Metal Health (1983), Condition Critical (1984), and QR III (1986) -- and while many listeners may only know the group's breakout hit, a cover of Slade's "Cum on Feel the Noize," the band consistently turned out its own quality pop-metal during its mid-'80s heydays. Less successful singles like "The Wild and the Young," "Sign of the Times," "Slick Black Cadillac," and "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)" may not make as many appearances on the myriad genre compilations as their more famous predecessor, but they're as good (if not better) than much of the juvenile crap that pushed them out of the limelight.

Those Were the Days is an ambitious four-disc, 63-track box set that divides Cream's career into two halves. The first two discs feature every studio track the group ever released, plus a handful of unreleased cuts, alternate takes, and rarities. The other two discs are devoted to live material, which is segued together in an attempt to recreate the "ideal" Cream concert. It's a remarkably comprehensive collection, complete with an extensive booklet and remastered sound, yet it doesn't reveal any new insights about Cream, nor does it offer any invaluable rarities. Therefore, it's only for die-hard collectors or listeners wanting to acquire the entire Cream catalog at once; casual fans will be satisfied with individual albums or greatest-hits collections.

You shouldn't be misled by this album's title. Slaughter didn't specialize in grisly death metal: they were pop metalists that stressed melody to a fault, as evidenced throughout Mass Slaughter: The Best Of Slaughter. For a fleeting moment in the early '90s (just before grunge), Slaughter were one of the most promising new bands in an up-and-coming melodic rock class which also included Firehouse, Giant, and Steelheart, among others. While best known for the party rock anthem "Up All Night" and the dramatic power ballad "Fly to the Angels," Slaughter had other strong tunes that slipped through the cracks, such as "Days Gone By," "You Are the One," and "Real Love." Mass Slaughter: The Best Of Slaughter contains all the hits you'd expect.
