2011, as you'll doubtless have heard from many a quarter, is pencilled in as the year when guitars resume their twang chart-wards and small children start picking up tennis rackets again when they're playing at being pop stars. All well and good, but, given that the pop bar's been raised sufficiently high in recent times courtesy of tracks like Telephone, Pass Out and Katy on a Mission, where on earth is this resurgence going to come from? Frankly, the odds on it emanating from the Beady Eyes of the world are unspectacular.

Bryan Adams negotiated the shifting tides of the '80s so well that it never seemed like he was changing his music to fit the times. A veteran of the '70s studio arena rock game, Adams struck out on his own in the early '80s, turning into a star in his native Canada and making headway with his 1983 album, Cuts Like a Knife. All of this was a prelude to Reckless, the 1984 album that turned him into an international superstar, selling by the truckloads in North America, Europe, and Asia thanks to the hits "Run to You," "Heaven," and "Summer of '69." From that point on, Adams was the most unassuming of rock stars, riding high on the charts and selling out arenas, even breaking Billboard records with his power ballad "Everything I Do (I Do It for You)," but never quite dominating the public imagination (or earning the critical respect) as such peers as Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. Nevertheless, Adams remained a formidable presence on the American charts into the mid-'90s, and while the popularity of his new records started to slip after that, he retained his audience in Canada and the U.K. and his '80s hits remained radio staples as he began a career as a photographer.

Is this the ultimate Bobby Day compilation? With 28 songs from the late '50s and early '60s, including half a dozen that he did as part of Bob & Earl and detailed track by track liner notes, you would think so. Even admitting that he was a fine early rock & roll singer, 28 songs by Day might be too much, though. The fact is that a good number of the singles collected here sounded similar to each other, and sometimes seemed like strained attempts to make derivative knockoffs of his best-known hits, the great "Rockin' Robin," "Over and Over," and the original version of "Little Bitty Pretty One" (which are the first three cuts on the CD). Still, it has its interest as a document of five years or so in the career of a guy who was not so much an R&B performer adapting to trends, as many in the early Los Angeles rock scene were, as someone who made records that were rock & roll, not R&B in the transition to rock & roll. For standouts in the track lineup, you might want to hear Bob & Earl's original 1958 version of the ballad "Gee Whiz," which would be a Top Thirty hit in 1961 for the Innocents. There are a few other ballads throughout the set, but Day's forte was actually up-tempo rock & roll, even though his likable, oh so slightly raw-edged vocals were more interesting than the (save for the three hits) often generic material. The 1962 obscurity "Oop-I-Du-Pers-Ball" has to rate as one of the more eccentric twist records of the early '60s, Day's all-out raucous vocals transcending to some degree the trivial novelty that the song actually was. Three of the songs are previously unissued alternate takes.

The Best of Both Worlds is a greatest hits album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 2004. The title references both their song of the same name, and the fact that the album has songs from their two main vocalists David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. The album featured three new songs from the band with Hagar on vocals, but Eddie Van Halen took over the bass work typically done by Michael Anthony. It featured no songs from the band's last studio album, Van Halen III, which featured Gary Cherone on vocals released in 1998.
he album features 16 songs from the Roth era (1978–1985), 17 from Hagar's recordings (1985–1996), plus three new Hagar songs. Roth was the vocalist for the first six albums, Hagar for the following four. The band's sales success was greater earlier, with combined US sales of 38 million for Roth era albums, while US sales for Hagar-era albums total 16 million (but, all four albums with Hagar went to #1, a feat never achieved with Roth). The album was released in promotion of the new reunion tour featuring Hagar back as lead singer. The three new songs were also performed live at various times.
According to Michael Anthony, the original plans involved one disk dedicated to Roth and another to Hagar which would feature the three new songs, but problems while negotiating with Roth led to the tracklisting which mixed songs from both singe

A more than adequate introduction to the world of Frank Zappa's instrumental music. The most successful folk-rock duo of the 1960s, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel crafted a series of memorable hit albums and singles featuring their choirboy harmonies, ringing acoustic and electric guitars, and Simon's acute, finely wrought songwriting. The pair always inhabited the more polished end of the folk-rock spectrum and was sometimes criticized for a certain collegiate sterility. Many also feel that Simon, as both a singer and songwriter, didn't truly blossom until he began his own hugely successful solo career in the 1970s. But the best of S&G's work can stand among Simon's best material, and the duo did progress musically over the course of their five albums, moving from basic folk-rock productions into Latin rhythms and gospel-influenced arrangements that foreshadowed Simon's eclecticism on his solo albums.

Strutting Texas blues. This compilation album at least features the man doing what he does best. Many collections concentrate on his dire seventies rock'n'roll glutfest and his even direr mid-sixties early embarrassments. It's the blues that defines him from 1969 onwards, and this CD thankfully concentrates on that definition of him as an artiste. Johnny Winter has many hardcore fans, myself obviously included. His fire, precision and inventiveness combine with his songwriting talents and his ability to quote stock phrases of the Blues Bible in a new and exciting way. This creates instant classics. I'm sometimes surprised to find I'm listening to a Winter original when I'd assumed it was something from the early rustic days of the blues. As for his guitar playing, well, combine the sting and attack of Albert "the Ice Man" Collins and the raw scrape of slide legend Elmore James and the development of musical sentences from Clapton's Cream days and you'll have a fair idea of Johnny's appeal. That voice too is pretty cool - it's like a coyote gargling with sandpaper. Diehard fans will have all these tracks anyway - they've appeared on his three Alligator Records releases from the early to mid eighties. And they're terrific. A healthy helping of Texan blues with extra chili - he yodels, growls, yelps and brags through these songs with an energy and relish that's kinda hard to resist. Each solo is a delight- the slower numbers feature exciting developments of licks and phrases - you can follow the ideas through each solo, and the faster songs combine Chuck Berry chops with sudden high register flurries. Guitar fans will argue until the end of time about the merits of their particular hero. My mind was made up in 1969 with one song from a CBS sampler. Yep, it was I Love Everybody by Johnny Winter from his third album, confusingly called Second Winter. I bought every album for the next 40 years and the tracks on this compilation represent a period I recall with great fondness. At the risk of sounding cliched - Go Johnny Go! (Amazon's Customer)

Playlist: The Very Best of Quiet Riot features 15 tracks defined on the back jacket as "the life-changing songs, the out-of-print tracks, the hits, the fan favorites everyone loves, and the songs that make the artists who they are." While it may boast little in the way of rare, live, unreleased, or "out-of-print" material, it certainly eclipses 1996's Greatest Hits collection as the most listenable Quiet Riot overview on the market. All 14 tracks (15 is a CD-ROM cut) are culled from the group's three biggest albums -- Metal Health (1983), Condition Critical (1984), and QR III (1986) -- and while many listeners may only know the group's breakout hit, a cover of Slade's "Cum on Feel the Noize," the band consistently turned out its own quality pop-metal during its mid-'80s heydays. Less successful singles like "The Wild and the Young," "Sign of the Times," "Slick Black Cadillac," and "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)" may not make as many appearances on the myriad genre compilations as their more famous predecessor, but they're as good (if not better) than much of the juvenile crap that pushed them out of the limelight.

Mostly, this piece offers Hackett signature style of melodic, sometimes progressive, rock bolstered by symphonic notes. Seems he only gets better with age. Strongly recommended for fans and guitar connoisseurs.

A superb vocalist even at the age of 13, Helen Humes rarely left that peak of performance, appearing in front of some of the most swinging jump tunes as well as the most affecting jazz ballads during her long career. Like Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, Humes was an early resonator with the blues, which allowed her the intensity of feeling to carry across any type of material with conviction and passion. Jazz Factory, the superb Spanish reissue label, obliged fans of Humes and vocal music alike with a three-disc collection of recordings from the first quarter-century of her career. While still a teenager, she sounded very mature (artistically and otherwise) for a series of ten 1927 risque blues titles like "If Papa Has Outside Lovin'" and "Do What You Did Last Night." Off record for ten years but apparently still growing as a singer, Humes reappeared in 1937 on two Harry James sessions with a sublime gloss on up-tempo swinging blues reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald. She recorded three dozen excellent sides during the mid-'40s in front of bands led by Bill Doggett and Buck Clayton, and recorded the hit "Be-Baba-Leba" (which came from her own pen) with Doggett in 1945. Another title from the same year, "Voo-It," illustrates that Humes was an excellent scatter and also one of those musician vocalists who loved nothing more than hearing a great solo from one of her sidemen -- in this case, it's the crying trumpet of Snooky Young. She revisited the double entendre several times during 1947, and foreshadowed the direction of her '50s recordings with solid torch songs like "Time Out for Tears" and "Sad Feeling." An authoritative collection of Humes' early recordings, Complete 1927-1950 Recordings includes a wealth of enjoyable sides, though less-invested listeners will find much of what they want courtesy of the Best of Jazz compilation Her Best Recordings: 1927-1947 or Classics volumes like 1927-1945 and 1945-1947.

Nina's voice is so incredibly deep and soulful, and soul-filled. I was immediately drawn to several of the tracks, realizing that just one listen wasn't enough. Nina manages to incorporate the power of her life and times into each song, as a reflection of where she's been and yet a hope of things to come. She's simply unlike any artist I've heard.

In his own time on Immediate Records, British soul shouter Chris Farlowe's output was sliced and diced and re-compiled so many times that no one even remembers the names of his original albums for the label (not that those were any better or more coherent -- Immediate founder Andrew Oldham was always so busy trying to exploit Farlowe any way he could, as one of the two or three best-selling talents on his label). Out of Time, subtitled "The Immediate Anthology," is the solution, its 49 songs drawn equally from Farlowe's singles, B-sides, EPs, and LP tracks, with the quality of the performances the only real deciding factor. The first half-dozen songs here could sell even the skeptics on Farlowe's talent, his renditions of "In the Midnight Hour," "Mr. Pitiful" and "Treat Her Right" are among the most convincing white soul you're ever likely to hear from either side of the Atlantic, and they also explain precisely how Farlowe was able to share a stage with Otis Redding (the equivalent of visiting royalty) on Ready, Steady Go (when Farlowe covered his first Stones' song, "Satisfaction," he used an arrangement that made it sound more like Otis than like the Stones). The only disadvantage is that the hits are, of necessity, spread out to two platters, but if it were solely the hits one were concerned with, then one would be getting one of those compilations, instead of this jewel, the next-best thing to a Chris Farlowe box set. The sound is never less than excellent -- and good and loud -- and the annotation is very thorough. This set makes the perfect companion to Rock 'n' Roll Soldier: Anthology 1970-2004.
