In one sense, human heads function much like those of other mammals. We use them to chew, smell, swallow, think, hear, and so on. But, in other respects, the human head is quite unusual. Unlike other animals, even our great ape cousins, our heads are short and wide, very big brained, snoutless, largely furless, and perched on a short, nearly vertical neck. Daniel E. Is this the ultimate Bobby Day compilation? With 28 songs from the late '50s and early '60s, including half a dozen that he did as part of Bob & Earl and detailed track by track liner notes, you would think so. Even admitting that he was a fine early rock & roll singer, 28 songs by Day might be too much, though. The fact is that a good number of the singles collected here sounded similar to each other, and sometimes seemed like strained attempts to make derivative knockoffs of his best-known hits, the great "Rockin' Robin," "Over and Over," and the original version of "Little Bitty Pretty One" (which are the first three cuts on the CD). Still, it has its interest as a document of five years or so in the career of a guy who was not so much an R&B performer adapting to trends, as many in the early Los Angeles rock scene were, as someone who made records that were rock & roll, not R&B in the transition to rock & roll. For standouts in the track lineup, you might want to hear Bob & Earl's original 1958 version of the ballad "Gee Whiz," which would be a Top Thirty hit in 1961 for the Innocents. There are a few other ballads throughout the set, but Day's forte was actually up-tempo rock & roll, even though his likable, oh so slightly raw-edged vocals were more interesting than the (save for the three hits) often generic material. The 1962 obscurity "Oop-I-Du-Pers-Ball" has to rate as one of the more eccentric twist records of the early '60s, Day's all-out raucous vocals transcending to some degree the trivial novelty that the song actually was. Three of the songs are previously unissued alternate takes.

Broken Social Scene materialized in 1999 when K.C. Accidental's Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, formerly of By Divine Right, bonded their friendship into a band. They spent the next few years honing an atmospheric rock sound in their native Toronto and the dynamic was great. Feel Good Lost marked their debut album in 2001 and introduced a revolving cast of Canadian indie musicians. Drew's fellow mate from Do Make Say Think, Charles Spearin, was added to the band, as well as Evan Cranley (Stars), James Shaw, and Emily Haines (Metric). By the time their guitar-fueled sophomore effort, You Forgot It in People, was released in fall 2002, Broken Social Scene had become an 11-piece collective. Jason Collett, Andrew Whiteman, Justin Peroff, and Leslie Feist fulfilled the band's bombastic, orchestrated sound, and critics loved it. You Forgot It in People was a buzz among indie cohorts, and plans for a stateside release on Arts & Crafts was slated for the following summer. A surprise, however, coincided with those plans in spring 2003 when Broken Social Scene won a Juno for Alternative Album of the Year for You Forgot It in People.

Considering that David Lee Roth's solo career crashed after two albums and an EP, it should have been easy to assemble a 20-track greatest-hits compilation. Rhino's The Best proves that isn't so. Most of Roth's best-known songs are here, including "California Girls," "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody," "Yankee Rose," "Ladies Nite in Buffalo?," "Goin' Crazy," "Skyscraper," "Just Like Paradise," and "Stand Up." However, the collection contains too many mediocrities from the flat albums A Little Ain't Enough and Your Filthy Little Mouth while overlooking radio and MTV staples like "Damn Good" and "That's Life." Furthermore, the collection isn't assembled in chronological order, which makes it a bit of a difficult listen. Even with these faults, there's no arguing that The Best does distill Roth's best solo recordings to one disc, making it a useful compilation for most casual fans. Nevertheless, after listening to all of The Best, many listeners will probably think a little is enough and 20 tracks might be a bit too much

This double-CD set presents a real conundrum, on a lot of levels. For starters, on its face, 55 songs may well seem like overkill to the casual fan who only knows or remembers (or thinks they only remember) five or six big hits by Paul Revere & the Raiders. And there are more modest single-CD collections to be found on this band that seem less daunting. But as it turns out -- for those who give this set a try -- Paul Revere & the Raiders did have just enough hits, when coupled with a sufficient number of respected album tracks and B-sides, to sustain a double-CD set. And that goes double for anyone who likes plain old rock & roll -- even when this band got ambitious and a little bit progressive and serious, they never lost sight of the value of a great beat and carefully placed vocal and instrumental hooks, and they were always fun. The truth is, whether it was the classic lineup playing frat rock or an early-'70s version of the band delving into more complex songs, these guys delivered high-quality music across a decade, from 1964 through 1974, and it's all represented here. And amazingly, this was the first Raiders compilation to include "Indian Reservation," the group's only number one hit, or to place it alongside their earlier round of hits, so that one can hear their progression from Pacific Northwest dance rock to smoothly professional AM pop/rock, absorbing elements of the British Invasion, garage punk, and psychedelia along the way.

This 3-disc set is exceptional value for Julie London fans, comprising tracks from the early years of her recording career, through the Liberty singles as well as her Capitol recordings. Julie London's sultry, come-hither vocal delivery is evident throughout such numbers as "'Round Midnight", "When I Fall in Love", "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning", "Hot Toddy" and "I Got it Bad". There are also fun numbers like "Give a Little Whistle" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy". Julie London was her own worst enemy when it came to her musical career; she never felt that her voice was special, nor did she think her overall musicality as good as other jazz singers of the period. While she did have some healthy competition from such singers as June Christy, Rosemary Clooney and Peggy Lee, Ms London managed to hold her own, garnered a legion of devoted fans, and recorded many chart albums. A fantastic gift for the Julie London fan in your house!

"Vangelis - Blade Runner: EMS Recombination" is an EMS Team attempt to create a "Best of" soundtrack from all the available bootlegs of Vangelis’ superb score. The selection criteria was very simple: find the pieces that represented the film score in their cleanest (without dialogue and sfx as much as was possible) versions and be of the best available sound quality. For the lossless release, the EMS Team wanted to offer something a little different and not just repackage the original version. Changes were made to the running order and tracks were reworked as other sources were found. Extended versions of "At Mr. Chew's" and "Desolation Path" were created along with new tracks "Waiting For Zhora" and "Memories Of Green/Blade Runner Blues". With the help of some new friends, the EMS Team are proud to present for the first time a clean version of "Thinking Of Rachel".

Alan Davies kicks off the first show followed by Lee Mack, Jo Brand, Jessica Hynes and Sean Lock who each talk to Bill about their all-time fantasy nominations; from past comedic greats to present day comedy icons, in some of the categories from The British Comedy Awards. So who are their all-time heroes, what are their favourite shows, and which comedians inspired them so much that they wish they could hand them an award?
