Kurt Hostettmann - Tout savoir sur les plantes qui deviennent des drogues.[MULTI]
Favre | ISBN : 2828906868 | 2002-05 | PDF | 136 Pages | 101 MB

The Art of Building in the Classical World by John R. Senseney
English | 2011-03-14 | ISBN: 1107002354 | PDF | 262 Pages | 5.32 MB

This book examines the application of drawing in the design process of classical architecture, exploring how the tools and techniques of drawing developed for architecture subsequently shaped theories of vision and representations of the universe in science and philosophy. Building on recent scholarship that examines and reconstructs the design process of classical architecture, John R. Senseney focuses on technical drawing in the building trade as a model for the expression of visual order, showing that the techniques of ancient Greek drawing actively determined concepts about the world. He argues that the uniquely Greek innovations of graphic construction determined principles that shaped the massing, special qualities, and refinements of buildings and the manner in which order itself was envisioned.

Awards season was even more depressing than usual for anyone who loves smart, honest country music. Taylor Swift's banal adolescent ramblings, one-hook wonders Lady Ante-

bellum's constant droning, all of Miranda Lambert's wicked sass kicked out of her on that sappy song about the house .... So imagine what a relief it is to hear real poetry, ingenious wit and pedal steel perfection on Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers' second album. A Seattle kid who somehow remembers everything Nashville's forgotten, songwriter Muth sings in a slightly flat purr that works equally well on evocatively elusive country rock lyrics ("I've Been Gone," "Before the Night Is Gone"), socially engaged folk ballads ("Tired Worker's Song") and "If I Can't Trust You With a Quarter," the greatest and funniest anthem ever written (with Anna Brown) for a honky-tonk angel with superior musical tastes. The High Rollers are as tight and innovative a country band as you could ever want to hear; they bring the traditional without ever sounding stale. In a genre that's declared authentic and fresh dirty words, Muth and the boys make those lost values ring.

Lou Reed has always dabbled in contrasts, so it comes as no surprise that the follow-up to his darkly serious concept album BERLIN was a commercially oriented, good-time rock & roll fest. ROCK N' ROLL ANIMAL is a live set that finds Reed stretching out on some of his best-loved Velvet Underground tunes with the help of his crack touring band at the time. Though the songs are somewhat given to stylistic excess, the overall sound is streamlined, accessible, and visceral.

The twin guitar attack of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter help transform Velvet classics like "White Light White Heat," "Sweet Jane," and "Rock 'N' Roll" into pomp/glam-rock [is pomp the word meant here? not pop?] showpieces, complete with extended arrangements, elaborate instrumental sections, and of course, plenty of long guitar solos. Those who cling to the image of Reed as punk godfather might be mystified by his transformation here into Rock God. But the heart of rock & roll beats in the chest of all of Reed's chameleon-like personalities, and ROCK 'N' ROLL ANIMAL amplifies the sound of that heart to great effect.

Recorded live in 1973, Rock N Roll Animal is Reed's glam-rock sneer back at his Velvet Underground legacy. Five tracks are VU classics (two about the redemptive power of rock, three about the transformative power of drugs) dressed up into slick, flashy twin-guitar attacks, with big riffs and solos. Eight previously unissued tracks, three from 1972's Transformer LP, four from 1973's Berlin LP, and one VU classic flesh out this reissue version of the original concert in it's entirety.

The bulk of Shaw's great sessions were recorded for independent labels (Muse & Contemporary,) ensuring them widespread critical evaluation but little audience except with the hardcore faithful. Things seemed about to change in the late '70s when Miles Davis suggested to Columbia that they record Shaw's group. They actually took his suggestion and signed Shaw. He issued a string of remarkable but low-selling records, and Columbia cut him loose after four years and four albums. They compounded the crime by deleting the records shortly after Shaw departed. Mosaic has corrected that slight with another of their marvelously produced and comprehensively notated and packaged box sets. This three-disc collection covers Shaw's Columbia sessions. While it is sad that Shaw's stay at Columbia was not more personally beneficial, it was quite musically productive.

3 CDs | Genre: Country,Blues | Release: 1996 | MP3 VBR kbps | 346 MB

Many Bear Family releases seem like overkill, but this one is easy to justify. This triple CD is a truly wonderful collection, including every one of the 64 sides that Rex Griffin recorded between 1935 and 1946, and also 16 songs recorded as demos by his brother Buddy between 1948 and 1955. The repertory runs the gamut from Jimmie Rodgers-style yodel pieces to highly effective white blues ("I'm Ready to Reform"), and even the future rock & roll standard "Everybody's Tryin' to Be My Baby." Griffin only had six series recording sessions in his whole career, none lasting more than a day or two, and he recorded as many as ten songs at a time, in effect creating an album's worth of songs, more than 90 percent of it original material. The strange thing is that, despite the fact that each of these sessions pretty much meant using the same backgrounds on each song, they would work as albums -- the material is so strong that it didn't have to be trickled out as singles. The other thing that one notices about these sides is that, along with the quality of the material, the playing is also first-rate. The 1944 sides, radio transcription discs recorded with a band that may have included Red Foley on guitar, intended for broadcast, capture some of the excitement of a Griffin stage performance with his own early-'40s band. These are brisk, rippling, immediate live-in-the-studio honky tonk-style renditions of "Everybody's Tryin' to Be My Baby," "An Old Faded Photograph," "Mean Woman Blues," and other 1930s vintage songs, as well as newer material. The set is worth the investment, even if that means saving up for it.

In 1993, Peter Brotzmann launched his Die Like A Dog quartet to pay tribute to the short and turbulent life of his near-contemporary Albert Ayler, a synchronistic saxophone innovator and fellow timbral virtuoso ('It's not about notes, it's about sounds'). all the highs and lows of an insane 'career' that nudged Albert ever closer to that dog's death in the East River. 'Die Like A Dog', though, has to be a misnomer for the life-affirming music of Brotzmann's quartet. Kondo, a most curious fellow whose every appearance seems a Zen manifestation - he pops up suddenly, like an oriental rabbit out of a hat - is, according to this month's jazz press, on conversational terms with the Dalai Lama. He's also a long term student of T'ai Chi and knows when to hit.

The very first complete set on Leroy Carr who was a hugely influential early blues artist who can be credited with creating Urban Blues and who gave the music a sophisticated edge that would be taken up by many future artists. This is where Rhythm & Blues started! Leroy Carr was also a huge influence on Robert Johnson. Over the course of its four discs and 95 songs, this box set tells you pretty much all you could wish to know about pianist Leroy Carr and guitarist Scrapper Blackwell. They did plenty of solo work during this period, but between 1928 and 1934 they were also one of the most successful blues duos in America. Though this comprehensive collection is described as "early recordings," there's not much more to the pair's story, since Carr died in 1935, driving a mournful Blackwell into decades of retirement. From the classic "How Long, How Long Blues" to later sides like the sorrowful "Blues Before Sunrise," Blackwell's jazz-schooled guitar licks and Carr's urban piano style combined for a more sophisticated sound that foreshadowed blues's eventual move from the country to the city.

A host of contradictions--the insufficiency of her collaborators, the spectacular potential of her voice, the inconsistency of her efforts--have left Joplin's historical legacy a tangled mess. The new 3 CD box set, Janis, captures that mess in all its glory but does little to untangle it. Typical of compiler Bob Irwin's decisions was his choice to replace the familiar version of George Gershwin's "Summertime" from the "Cheap Thrills" album by a weaker but unreleased alternate take. There are too many examples of strangled singing by Joplin's male partners in Big Brother and not enough examples of her incendiary live performances. The album begins with Joplin's first-ever recording, a vocal-and-autoharp version of "What Good Can Drinkin' Do" taped in a friend's living room in Austin in '62. That's followed by two unreleased blues recorded with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen in a San Francisco living room in '65 and eight songs from the controversial (and hard-to-find) 1966 debut album, "Big Brother & the Holding Company." "Cheap Thrills" is represented by five cuts, four outtakes and one live version; "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!" is represented by seven cuts, one outtake and two live versions; and "Pearl" by eight cuts and three outtakes. Other rarities include a longer spoken introduction to "Mercedes Benz" and two live performances on "The Ed Sullivan Show." The 48-page booklet features nude photos of Joplin on the outside and feminist essays about her on the inside. Ellen Willis compares Joplin's self-created image to Madonna's, ignoring the crucial fact that Joplin was a brilliant singer while Madonna is hardly any kind of singer at all. Ann Powers addresses the music itself and correctly points out that Joplin's art was not merely unmediated emotion but a premeditated mix of gambles and craft, of Bessie Smith's open-throated wails and Otis Redding's gruff shouts. She was some kind of singer, and that's what she should be remembered for. --Geoffrey Himes

Strutting Texas blues. This compilation album at least features the man doing what he does best. Many collections concentrate on his dire seventies rock'n'roll glutfest and his even direr mid-sixties early embarrassments. It's the blues that defines him from 1969 onwards, and this CD thankfully concentrates on that definition of him as an artiste. Johnny Winter has many hardcore fans, myself obviously included. His fire, precision and inventiveness combine with his songwriting talents and his ability to quote stock phrases of the Blues Bible in a new and exciting way. This creates instant classics. I'm sometimes surprised to find I'm listening to a Winter original when I'd assumed it was something from the early rustic days of the blues. As for his guitar playing, well, combine the sting and attack of Albert "the Ice Man" Collins and the raw scrape of slide legend Elmore James and the development of musical sentences from Clapton's Cream days and you'll have a fair idea of Johnny's appeal. That voice too is pretty cool - it's like a coyote gargling with sandpaper. Diehard fans will have all these tracks anyway - they've appeared on his three Alligator Records releases from the early to mid eighties. And they're terrific. A healthy helping of Texan blues with extra chili - he yodels, growls, yelps and brags through these songs with an energy and relish that's kinda hard to resist. Each solo is a delight- the slower numbers feature exciting developments of licks and phrases - you can follow the ideas through each solo, and the faster songs combine Chuck Berry chops with sudden high register flurries. Guitar fans will argue until the end of time about the merits of their particular hero. My mind was made up in 1969 with one song from a CBS sampler. Yep, it was I Love Everybody by Johnny Winter from his third album, confusingly called Second Winter. I bought every album for the next 40 years and the tracks on this compilation represent a period I recall with great fondness. At the risk of sounding cliched - Go Johnny Go! (Amazon's Customer)

George Benson is simply one of the greatest guitarists in jazz history, but he is also an amazingly versatile musician, and that frustrates to no end critics who would paint him into a narrow bop box. He can play in just about any style -- from swing to bop to R&B to pop -- with supreme taste, a beautiful rounded tone, terrific speed, a marvelous sense of logic in building solos, and, always, an unquenchable urge to swing. His inspirations may have been Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery -- and he can do dead-on impressions of both -- but his style is completely his own. Not only can he play lead brilliantly, he is also one of the best rhythm guitarists around, supportive to soloists and a dangerous swinger, particularly in a soul-jazz format.

Tony Bennett has a typical lack of effusiveness about the kudos of his seven-decade career, but he does reportedly display an inscribed picture from a longtime colleague and fellow saloon singer in his Manhattan apartment. It reads: "To the best goddamned pop singer I've ever heard." It's signed "Frank Sinatra." But don't take the Chairman's word for it. Just listen as these two discs bound from one masterly performance to the next, documenting a career whose ups and downs--Bennett actually went long years without a record contract--belie a robust evolution of vocal strength and subtlety of phrasing. The arc of Bennett's art in the decade from "Cold Cold Heart" and "Rags to Riches" to "The Best Is Yet To Come" and his signature "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" is remarkable enough, but it just keeps getting better. When the singer's management shrewdly orchestrated his MTV-powered "comeback" in the late 1980s and '90s, Bennett delivered considerably more than mere hype. Indeed, the highlights of those efforts (a warm, semi-autobiographical collection of ballads; tributes to Sinatra, Astaire, Ellington, and the blues; the obligatory MTV Unplugged set) included here barely skim the surface and arguably warrant a double-disc collection all their own. Still, the 39 tracks here represent the best kind of anthology: one that leaves you craving more. --Jerry McCulley

This great album compiles Eddy Grant’s greatest hits and also offers some excellent 12-inch dance remixes of his best songs. Those Were the Days is an ambitious four-disc, 63-track box set that divides Cream's career into two halves. The first two discs feature every studio track the group ever released, plus a handful of unreleased cuts, alternate takes, and rarities. The other two discs are devoted to live material, which is segued together in an attempt to recreate the "ideal" Cream concert. It's a remarkably comprehensive collection, complete with an extensive booklet and remastered sound, yet it doesn't reveal any new insights about Cream, nor does it offer any invaluable rarities. Therefore, it's only for die-hard collectors or listeners wanting to acquire the entire Cream catalog at once; casual fans will be satisfied with individual albums or greatest-hits collections.

It is impossible to appreciate Ron Wood's music and muscianship to the fullest without the context of the original albums. Buying every single album Ron Wood has ever been part of, however, is obviously not cost effective for the casual fan. So the compilation "albums" are the next best thing. Every music fan needs to have a little Woodie in their collection. That being said, "Essential Crossexion" is arguably the best Ron Wood compilation available; & a great place to start a Ron Wood collection for someone on a budget. The track selection here is phenomenal. The songs span from his early career as a bassist with Jeff Beck to guitarist & Keith's foil in the Stones. The sound quality is very, very good and a definite upgrade if you have some of this music on the original cd releases or even vinyl. The great thing about this is you can use this album as a springboard to explore Wood's individual albums or work with his other bands. My personal favorites are "I've Got My Own Album To Do" and the best album the Stones never did, "Gimme Some Neck"; both feature Keith Richard too. For fans out there who already have some of Wood's cds, get "Crossexion" for playing in the car (especially if you are too lazy, like me, to compile your own disc from the original album cds).
